Torture is legal. Tortured logic is also legal.
According to our sagacious leaders whose wisdom beams forth like a thousand suns dispelling the darkness of the lazy and ignorant classes, the surge was clearly a success since it led to a lull in violence. These wise leaders now tell us that the recent surge in violence also shows that the surge is clearly working. Hmmmmmmm.

What dictionary are they using?
I don't think the problem is with the lexicon -- these people need to study some Aristotelian logic: there cannot be an X such that X equals X and X equals not X. We're living in a pretty strange world when both violence and the lack of violence can be used as proof for the same argument.
