19%

According according to a recent survey from the American Research Group:

Among all Americans, 19% approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president and 77% disapprove. When it comes to Bush's handling of the economy, 14% approve and 79% disapprove.

What I want to know is who these 19% are. I imagine some abused 18 year old kids who have been tied up and forced to watch Fox News in their basements for the last 5 years.

An excellent question.

My guess: they're idealogues, people whose first allegiance is to their worldview--in this case a religious one. They are not measuring W's performance on any quantifiable measures of governmental success, but are rather grading him on his stated commitment to the religious conversion of society.

These are the "religious conservatives" that court guys like Huckabee and Romney (and whose influence put W in office to begin with). I think these instincts insofar as they mix with one's view of government are deeply anti-democratic, a HUGE threat to church / state separation, which these kind of conservatives don't seem to grasp at all.

If THIS is the question that's asked--say, "Do you approve of W as a God-fearing man?" or "Do you approve of how W is doing God's work?"--I suspect W's approval ratings would be much higher, but not everyone is willing to embrace this philosophy publically.

I was wondering who on earth the 30% were when that number was batted around. Now it's down to 19%, I think I can handle that. After all, it doesn't say where those 19% are located. How many people in the Bush family again?

The Bush family, defense subcontractors, billionaires, and people with a mean streak combined with a sub-80 IQ: I think you're right--19% is about as low as it can get.
